Multi-Cloud Newsletter Oct. 2021 - issue #3
Hi and welcome to the third Multi-Cloud Newsletter, summarizing the most relevant multi-cloud news of the last couple of weeks, with a slight VMware slant. The newsletter will also be posted on the website (filipv.net) for future reference. You can subscribe to it via the subscribe button. (you will only get the newsletter via email, nothing else, no ads either).
Multi-Cloud Musings
VMware recently held its annual VMworld event, billed as the premier multi-cloud event. You can still catch the best of VMworld session on-demand via: https://www.vmware.com/vmworld/en/video-library/search.html#year=2021 or alternatively, as per usual, VMware's William Lam has kindly provided direct on-demand URLs for all VMworld 2021 Sessions which you can find here: https://williamlam.com/2021/10/direct-on-demand-urls-for-all-vmworld-2021-sessions.html
The ITQ crew also did a great job pre-viewing and reviewing the event on their youtube channel which you can check-out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/ITQConsultancy/videos
I did one myself (shameless plug) as well with Tom Vallons on moving from a cloud-first to a cloud-smart strategy:
Fingers crossed this was the last purely virtual edition, the dates for next year are currently set for August 30th till sept 1st for the US, and November 7th till November 10th 2022.

Talking about events, one of my other favourite ones is Microsoft Iginite which is happening online November 2nd till 4th and will offer the opportunity to explore the latest tools, training sessions, technical expertise, networking opportunities, and more.

MS Ignite in 2019 was the last in-person event I was able to attend, and I'm jonesing to get back on the road, the traditional Universal Studios celebratory event might also have something do with it. 🍩

I hope you enjoy this 3rd edition of the newsletter and don't hesitate to send me feedback via Twitter (DM's are open) so I can improve things.

The Multicloud Conundrum
The Pentagon decided that going with a single cloud vendor wasn’t going to meet its long-term needs. Instead, it announced a new multivendor contract, the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability, which will solicit bids from Microsoft, Amazon and other cloud providers if they can meet the U.S. government’s specifications.
As it turns out, a growing number of companies are also deciding that going with one vendor isn’t the best option for their businesses. Many are creating their own multicloud – and actually, multi-“as a service” – technology stacks, including software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), devices and more.

Cloud Choice for Data Sovereignty
One of the questions that needs to be answered when it comes to public cloud computing is sovereignty, in Europe this has been brought into focus more explicitly via the Gaia-X project. In the article below Laurent Allard, Strategic Business Development, VMware points out the impact to local cloud providers of the Gaia-X vision.

Business Innovation Across Multiclouds
In this The New Stack Makers podcast, a panel of technology executives discussed the best ways to speed up business innovation in today’s multicloud and multi-infrastructure world. Over a virtual pancake breakfast during VMworld, VMware‘s annual user conference, they also discussed how to deliver apps and services faster to improve the customer experience.

In a multi-cloud world – complexity is the enemy
Until recently, most teams that were responsible for app dev and IT operations were mono cloud in their orientation to the public cloud. They were using a single cloud exclusively or almost exclusively to support the applications for which they were responsible. Today more and more these teams are beginning to look at building and running applications across more than one cloud. This blog on Cloud Tools and Platform Standardization represents part 7 of a multi-part blog series on multi-cloud use maturity.

Dell-VMware Spin-Off Set For Nov. 1, Stock Dividend Approved
VMware CEO Raghu Raghuram recently told CRN that his company is looking to becoming the “Switzerland” of multi-cloud in the IT industry.
“If you think about multi-cloud, what we really are saying is that we want to be the Switzerland of the industry. So if you want to be the Switzerland of the industry, then you want to be a stand-alone independent company, and that’s where we are headed,” said Raghuram. “It will allow partners that previously were competitors of Dell to now look at VMware with new life and say, ’Hey, we can do strategic things with VMware.’ But at the same time, we have a fantastic relationship with Dell, who we do a tremendous amount of business with. We have certified that into a commercial framework agreement and a technology agreement that allows for continued deepening technology and business collaboration with Dell.”
Raghuram said the spin-off will be a “best-of-both-worlds” situation.
“From a capital structure point of view, the capital structure will obviously be simpler and will allow us to have more flexibility and growth,” Raghuram said.
